About Tibetan Terriers
The Tibetan Terrier is an ancient breed that originated in the Himalayan country of Tibet. They were used by the nomads in the region to herd their livestock and children and retrieve articles that fell down the mountainside. The Tibetan Terriers were very adept at this due to their agility, unique foot structure and wonderful jumping abilities. They were loyal family watchdogs.
The lamas in the monasteries took note of these unique dogs and brought them into the monastery where they were treasured and kept purebred for over 2000 years. They were never sold, but rather would be given as gifts to visiting dignitaries as a mark of respect and to bring good luck.
They were known as ‘little people’ due to their unique ability to stand straight up on theirĀ hind legs, resembling children.
It is said that of three of the Tibetan breeds, the Tibetan Spaniel was the first to alert the lamas and monks of danger approaching..due to their keen eyesight, the Tibetan Terrier took up the position of guarding the monastery, and the Tibetan Mastiff ventured out to meet the approaching danger.
